We offer one-and-two day courses which cover technical aspects of pavement rehabilitation design as well as the use of Rubicon Toolbox.

Course List

Rubicon Solutions presents a two-day training course on pavement analysis and design. The course focuses on practical implementation of pavement design and analysis concepts. Key elements of the course include:

  • Overview of the mechanistic design and analysis method
  • Evaluation of pavement structural capacity using the South African Mechanistic Design Method
  • Cross-checking design capacity using AASHTO and catalogue design methods
  • Analysis of FWD data, including backcalculation
  • Basic analysis and documentation of Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) data
  • Holistic pavement design; deriving and documenting design assumptions
  • Pavement condition summary

During the course, short lectures on the theory of the concepts are given, followed by an assignment relevant to the topic under discussion. The assignments use the Rubicon Toolbox software, and are worked on both individually and in groups. More than half the course time is spent working on the assignments. Thus, hands-on experience is gained in implementation of the concepts discussed. A working knowledge of the main tools in the Rubicon Toolbox software is also obtained. The class sizes are limited to facilitate discussion and individual attention.

This course is not an introductory course in pavement engineering, although key concepts are briefly reviewed. The course is therefore best suited to participants who have some experience in pavement design and analysis. It is not necessary to have experience in the use of Rubicon Toolbox to participate in the course. The course is registered with SAICE one CPD credit.

Rubicon Solutions presents a two-day training course on Pavement Condition Analysis and Rehabilitation Design. The focus of the course is on practical and systematic implementation of the detailed rehabilitation process through assignments based on a real rehabilitation projects. Key elements of the course, and the Rubicon Toolbox Tools that are used, include:

  • Data management
  • Pavement performance history
  • Initial data processing, assessment and reporting
  • Processing, analysis, and reporting of materials test data
  • Analysis of deflections and backcalculation
  • Condition summary and formulation of design assumptions
  • Design criteria and evaluation
  • Risk analysis

During the course, short lectures are given to refresh concepts, followed by an assignment relevant to the topic under discussion. The assignments use real data from a single project to implement structured and systematic recording and evaluation of collective evidence. Data analysis and reporting are facilitated using the Rubicon Toolbox software. The majority of the course time is spent working on assignments both individually and in groups, hence a “hands-on” experience is guaranteed. A working knowledge of essential and more advanced tools in the Rubicon Toolbox software is also established. The class sizes are limited to facilitate discussion and individual attention. The course is presented by Dr Fenella Johns and/or Dr Arno Hefer, who have extensive experience in Pavement Design and Analysis.

This course is not an introductory course in pavement engineering, although key concepts are briefly reviewed. The course is therefore best suited to participants who have some experience in pavement design and analysis. It is not necessary to have experience in the use of Rubicon Toolbox to participate in the course. The course is registered with SAICE and is valid for two CPD credits.

Rubicon Solutions presents a one-day specialist seminar on pavement analysis and design. Key elements of the seminar include:

  • Refresher on using Rubicon Toolbox pavement design tools
  • Backcalculation refresher
  • Advanced use of the Data Viewer
  • Intricacies, anomalies and challenges of pavement engineering
  • Open Topic Session: Topics selected prior to seminar as tabled by delegates

During the seminar, short presentations on the topics will be given, followed by assignments to demonstrate the issue using Rubicon Toolbox. An open discussion will be held where topics of interest to delegates will be discussed, which will typically range from current projects to demonstration of more advanced tools in Rubicon Toolbox. To allow us to prepare for the discussion, topics should be suggested prior to the seminar. The seminar will involve significant group discussions. The number of delegates will be limited to facilitate discussion. The seminar will also act as a refresher on the use of Rubicon Toolbox.

Who Should Attend: This seminar should only be attended by Pavement Engineers with experience in pavement design and rehabilitation analysis. Delegates should have some experience with Rubicon Toolbox. The course is registered with SAICE and is valid for one CPD credit.

Our courses can also be held in-house (i.e. at your offices, for your staff only). We have found this to be a good team-building exercise, as well as a cost effective method of training your team. One of the three existing courses can be run, or we can customize a course to meet your specific needs.
